We reached out to Tesla for the official justification for the price increase and a Tesla spokesperson told Electrek that it wasn’t because of new hardware, but to better reflect the value of the product.
Pretty interesting quote, considering the looming Autopilot 2.0 refresh (new third camera and improved sensors) that is apparently coming with the new v8.0 of the Tesla OS, which is, supposedly, offering new AP improvements as well (yay for off-ramp detection!).
Do I think Autopilot is worth an extra $3,000? Hell yes! It's a fantastic convenience that has come in handy quite a bit for me (traffic, long-distance driving), and besides...it's pretty awesome to say that your car practically drives itself.
Anyway, I digress.
I think Tesla is justified in this. It's just an additional $500. What difference does that make when you're spending $135,000 on a Model S P100D, right?
